About
A calmer way to type faster
The Typing Hub is an independent, ad-free typing speed test, and a growing library of guides about what typing speed actually measures. It has been running since July 2026.
What this is
At its center is a typing test that reports four numbers rather than one: net words per minute, characters per minute, accuracy, and a consistency score derived from how much your speed varies second to second. Every run is graphed over its full duration and every mistake is available for review character by character.
Around it sits a set of long-form guides covering technique, benchmarks, workplace requirements, equipment and measurement. Those are written to answer a question properly rather than to rank for it, which means most of them are longer than the subject looks and several of them conclude that the popular answer is wrong. You can read them on the blog, or start with the tutorial if you want to know what the test itself does.
Why we built it
Most typing tests bury a simple task under ads, pop-ups and sign-up walls. We wanted the opposite: open the page, start typing, and get a clear read on how you did. No countdown to sit through, no account required, nothing to install. Just you and the keyboard.
The second reason is the writing. A great deal of published material about typing repeats figures that have no source behind them — records that were never verified, studies that turn out not to exist, productivity numbers traceable only to marketing pages. We check claims before publishing them and say so when the evidence is thin. How that works in practice is set out in our editorial standards.
Who runs it
The Typing Hub is an independent project rather than a company. It is small, self-funded, and independently operated — built and maintained by the same hands that use it daily. There is no investor, no parent organization and no marketing department behind it.
We publish under the name of the project rather than under personal bylines. That is a deliberate choice: the claims here are meant to stand on their sources and their reasoning, which are stated in the articles themselves and checkable by anyone. Responsibility for everything published sits with The Typing Hub, and the fastest way to hold us to that is to email us when we get something wrong.
How it is funded
There is no advertising on this site, no affiliate links, no sponsored placements and no paid product recommendations. Nothing here earns a commission when you click it, and nobody has paid to be mentioned, included or left out.
The test is free and always will be. Signing in is optional and exists for one reason only: to save your history so it follows you between devices. There is no paid tier and no upsell. The project is funded out of its operator's own pocket.
What you get
- Timed runs from 30 to 300 seconds, or a free run with no clock at all.
- A clear breakdown of every result — WPM, CPM, accuracy and consistency.
- A graph of your speed over the run and a character-by-character review of what you typed.
- A private history of your tests so you can watch your personal best climb over time.
- A public leaderboard, ranked by best result at each test length.
Your data
You can practice as a guest without ever creating an account, and your results stay on your own device. When you want your history kept safe and available anywhere, you can sign in with Google. That is the only reason to sign in, and it is entirely optional. Exactly what is stored either way is set out in our privacy policy.
