Why Your Typing Speed Stopped Improving (And What Fixes It)

There is a particular kind of frustration in practicing something regularly and watching the number refuse to move. You typed 58 words per minute in March. You have practiced most weeks since. It is now August and you type 58 words per minute.

The instinctive explanation is that you have found your limit. It is almost never true. Genuine physical ceilings exist, but they sit far above where most people stall, and virtually nobody plateauing in the 40s, 50s or 60s has met one.

Notice the last cell. Reaching the autonomous stage is the goal of learning to type — it is the entire point, the state where the keyboard stops competing for the attention you need for thinking. It is also where improvement stops, and for a reason that follows directly from what automaticity is.

A movement becomes automatic by being removed from conscious control. Once it runs without supervision, repeating it no longer teaches your hands anything, because nothing is monitoring the movement closely enough to change it. You can log hours in this state and get no return at all. The practice is real; the learning is not.

This is sometimes called the OK plateau: the point at which performance becomes good enough that the brain stops actively engaging with the task and hands it to autopilot. The first three months are close to free. You are moving through the cognitive and associative stages, where almost any practice produces gains because almost everything is still under conscious control and therefore still correctable.

Months four through seven are the plateau, and they are where most people conclude they have finished improving and stop. The typists who continue past it are not more talented. They changed what they were doing, usually because the flat stretch forced them to.

Which plateau are you actually on?

Plateaus at different speeds have different causes, and applying the wrong fix is the most common way to waste months. The constraint at 40 is not the constraint at 70.

The bands are approximate and overlap considerably. What matters is matching the intervention to the constraint rather than the number.

The bottom row is worth taking seriously. Above roughly 85 WPM the returns really do diminish, the practice required becomes disproportionate, and there is little practical benefit left to collect. Almost nobody reading this is there, but if you are, the honest answer is that a plateau at that level is closer to a genuine limit than a fixable problem. Why doing more of the same makes it worse

Condition 1: practice at the edge of your control

Before committing to weeks of changed practice, rule out the impostors. Several of them are common enough that checking costs nothing and occasionally saves months.

The cheapest check is the calendar. Look back at what you were actually measuring three months ago and confirm it is the same test, the same duration and the same passage settings you are using now. The first row is the one worth internalizing. Consistency — how evenly your speed is distributed across a run — reliably improves before raw speed does, because it measures automation directly.
