What actually moves your typing speed

Only three things change how fast you type, and knowing which one is currently binding you saves months. The first is method: whether you locate keys visually or from motor memory. The second is error rate, because only correct characters count toward your score, so every mistake is deducted twice — once in the time to make it and once in the time to fix it. The third is chunking: whether common letter sequences execute as single gestures or as strings of separate decisions. Those gestures are more portable than they look — they can even be re-pointed at your other hand when circumstances require it.

Ordinary practice touches none of them. Typing at your maximum on comfortable passages rehearses the movements you already own while leaving the constraint untouched, which is why people log hundreds of sessions and stay where they started. Deliberate practice means working at the edge of what you cannot yet do — slower than your maximum, on material you are not fluent in, with attention on what failed. It is worth knowing where extra speed stops helping, too: capturing more is not the same as learning more when the task is taking notes.

Illustrative of the shape rather than measured data, and it assumes 15 to 20 minutes a day with no change of method. The reliable part is the decay: roughly 3 WPM a week early on, falling to about 1 by week ten.

Note what that curve is not. It is not the shape you get when you change method — someone abandoning hunt-and-peck drops sharply in week one and takes two to three months to cross back over their old speed. If your speed has just fallen off a cliff because you stopped looking at the keyboard, you are on a different curve and it is working.

Your starting point also sets the rate. Below about 45 WPM the available gain is large and fast, because the constraint is usually method rather than fluency. Between 50 and 70 the gains are real but slower. Above 80, progress is measured in a few words per minute a year and is mostly a by-product of writing a great deal rather than of practice sessions. Proportions rather than a prescription — the ratio matters more than the exact minutes. Note that only three of the fifteen minutes are spent typing at full speed.

The proportions are the point. Twelve of those fifteen minutes are spent either below your maximum or not typing at all, and that allocation is what separates practice from repetition. If your current sessions consist of taking timed tests back to back until one of them is a personal best, you are measuring rather than training.

Durations assume a fifteen-minute session. Three or four of these in rotation is plenty — running all seven every day is how practice becomes a chore you abandon.

The bigram drill is the one most people have never tried and the one that breaks the widest range of plateaus. Fast typists do not type letter by letter — common sequences run as one flowing movement rather than four decisions — and that consolidation is what carries typists from the forties into the seventies. It is built by typing ordinary English repeatedly, not by typing faster.

Practice material matters more than practice time

What you type shapes what you get fluent at, and this is the most commonly wasted variable in typing practice. Random word lists have a narrow use: early on, they stop you coasting on phrases your hands already know. Past that point they actively hold you back, because the letter pairs and word endings that fast typing depends on only appear at natural frequency in real sentences. How often and how long should you practice?

How to break a plateau at 60 WPM

A wall in the fifties or sixties is a different problem with a different fix. You already have the technique; what limits you is that individual letters are automatic while whole words are not. Your hands still make four decisions to type tion instead of one, and at that speed the cost of those extra decisions is what you are feeling.

The fix is volume on real prose plus deliberate work below your maximum, because chunking forms through repetition of natural letter sequences and degrades the moment you strain. Practically: spend more sessions at 90 percent effort than at 100, take longer tests rather than more short ones, and drill the specific letter pairs that trip you up. Compare the median of several runs at one test length. A single best run is a ceiling you touched once under favorable conditions; the median is the speed you own.

These six are common, they all feel like practice, and none of them changes anything.

  • Typing at your maximum every session. It rehearses what you already own and automates the errors that come with straining.
  • Taking only thirty-second tests. Short runs reward a burst, hide drift and fatigue, and are noisy enough that you cannot tell progress from luck.
  • Retaking a test until you beat your best, then recording that. You have measured your ceiling on a good day, not your speed.
  • Practicing on random word lists indefinitely. Useful for learning the layout, counterproductive once you are building speed.
  • Never reading the error review. The list of characters you got wrong is the only thing in your results that tells you what to do tomorrow.
  • Long, infrequent sessions. Two hours on a Saturday is close to the least efficient schedule available, because consolidation happens between sessions.

Where to start

Take one cold run before changing anything, because the right work depends entirely on which of the three constraints is binding you. Take a timed test at sixty seconds or longer, record WPM, accuracy and consistency, and read the character-by-character review rather than only the score.
