How words per minute is counted

A word is not a word. In every standard typing test, one word is defined as five characters including spaces, which is why a passage of long technical terms and a passage of short common words can produce the same WPM. The convention exists so that scores are comparable across different texts rather than rewarding whoever happened to get easier vocabulary.

The calculation is straightforward once you know that. Count the characters you typed correctly, divide by five to convert to words, then divide by the minutes elapsed. Typing 300 correct characters in one minute gives 60 words per minute.
