Average Typing Speed: What Counts as Fast, and How You Compare
Almost everyone who looks up the average typing speed is really asking something narrower: am I slow? The figure usually quoted is about 40 words per minute, and as a headline it is accurate enough. As a personal benchmark it is close to useless, because it pools touch typists with people who have never learned the home row, and it treats a clean 40 WPM as identical to a frantic 40 WPM held together by backspaces.
The useful version of the question is not where the average sits, but which band you are in and what is holding you at its edge. Those are different questions with different answers.
What the speed bands actually look like
Typing speed clusters into recognisable ranges. Where you sit says far more about how you learned to type than about how many years you have been doing it.
- Under 30 WPM is where most self-taught hunt-and-peck typists land. Looking down imposes a hard ceiling, because every glance costs the rhythm you had just built.
- Around 40 WPM is the commonly cited average for adults who use a computer daily. It is reachable without any formal technique, which is precisely why so many people stop there.
- 50 to 60 WPM is what a touch typist reaches once finger placement is automatic and the keyboard has left their field of vision.
- 70 to 80 WPM is genuinely fast and almost always reflects deliberate practice rather than incidental use.
- 100 WPM and above is uncommon. It generally needs both proper technique and years of high-volume writing behind it.
- Stenographers recording 200 WPM and more are not doing the same task at all. Machine shorthand types whole syllables in chords rather than individual letters, so the number is not comparable to a keyboard test.
Why the average is a weak benchmark
An average is only meaningful when the population behind it is uniform, and this one is not. It blends two groups that barely overlap: people who learned touch typing and people who did not. The gap between those groups is larger than the gap between a beginner and an expert inside either one, so the midpoint describes almost nobody.
It is also a single number standing in for a distribution with a long tail. Because typing speed cannot fall below zero but can climb well past 100, the mean sits higher than the score most people actually get. Comparing yourself to it tells you less than comparing yourself to the band above the one you are in.
The same score can mean two different things
Two typists can finish a test on 40 WPM and be nowhere near each other in ability. The first typed at roughly 42 and made almost no errors. The second typed at 65 and lost a third of it to mistakes and corrections. Their net score is the same. Their problem is not.
This is why the gap between your raw and net speed is worth more attention than either number alone. Raw speed is how fast your hands moved. Net speed is what survived. A wide gap means your ceiling is already high and errors are the only thing holding you under it, which is a far easier problem to fix than genuinely slow hands. The metric that predicts your ceiling better than speed
Consistency measures how much your speed varied across the run rather than how high it peaked, and it is the better forecast of where you will end up. A typist holding a steady 45 WPM has automated the movement. A typist averaging 55 in bursts between stalls has not, and their average is being propped up by a handful of familiar words.
The practical consequence is that consistency tends to rise before speed does. If your WPM has been flat for weeks while your consistency has climbed, you are not on a plateau, you are on the part of the curve that comes just before one breaks. Most people quit there because they are watching the wrong number.
Does typing speed decline with age?
Charts breaking typing speed down by age are easy to find and hard to verify. Most circulate without a traceable methodology, without sample sizes, and without stating whether the figures came from touch typists, casual users, or a mix. They are quoted confidently because they are convenient, not because they are sound. We have not published one here for that reason.
What can be said with more confidence is that exposure explains far more of the variation than age does. Someone who has written at a keyboard daily for twenty years will usually outpace someone half their age who has spent most of that time on a phone. Age affects reaction time at the margins, but it is nowhere near the dominant factor, and treating it as one gives people a reason to stop trying that the evidence does not support.
How to place yourself properly
A single test is a snapshot taken under one set of conditions, and conditions move the number more than people expect. To get a figure you can actually rely on:
- Take a 60-second test rather than a 30-second one. Shorter runs reward a lucky burst and are noisier as a result.
- Repeat it across several different days rather than several times in one sitting, where warm-up and fatigue both distort the result.
- Use the median of those runs, not your best. Your best is the ceiling you touched once; the median is the speed you actually have.
- Record accuracy and consistency alongside the WPM. A speed figure without them is not comparable to anyone else's, including your own from last month.

The honest summary is that average is a poor target. It is a description of a crowd you have no particular reason to resemble. The band above the one you are in is a real target, it is usually closer than it looks, and accuracy is almost always the thing standing between you and it.
