The last row is worth reading carefully, because it catches people out. Court reporting and live captioning are not fast typing; they are a separate skill performed on a stenotype machine that types whole syllables in chords. Employer assessments generally do not score the speed you reached. They score an adjusted figure, and the adjustment is not gentle. A one-minute test scored against a requirement of 50 adjusted WPM at 95 percent accuracy. One word equals five characters; one uncorrected error is deducted as one word. Accuracy is correct keystrokes as a share of total keystrokes.

Scores fall between the practice site and the employer's test with almost boring reliability, and the reason is not nerves alone — though being watched has a mechanism of its own. The two are not measuring the same thing.

Most failed assessments are lost to a handful of avoidable decisions rather than to a genuine shortfall in speed.
