What the benchmarks actually mean

KPH figures look alarming until you convert them, and the conversion is the single most useful thing to know before reading a job posting.

Divide by 300. One word is standardized to five keystrokes, an hour contains sixty minutes, so KPH divided by 300 gives the approximate words-per-minute equivalent. An 8,000 KPH requirement is around 27 WPM. A demanding 15,000 is 50.

Two things are worth knowing about how these are scored. Why numbers punish errors harder than words

The heavy accuracy weighting in numeric entry is not arbitrary strictness. It follows from a genuine property of numbers that does not apply to prose.

Text carries redundancy. Type 'recieve' instead of 'receive' and a reader still understands it, spellcheck flags it, and the error is visible. Language is full of structure that makes mistakes detectable.

Numbers carry none. Type 4372 instead of 4327 and you have produced a perfectly valid figure.
